Despite asking its hardware partners not to show new Google TV devices at CES, Google has said that this is the year that Google TV will be available outside the US.

But if the first international Google TV devices are like the $300 Logitech Revue that’s currently shipping in the US, will you want one when you can buy it?

The idea behind Google TV is to take the TV screen and the TV channels you already have and add the web, complete with Flash and HTML 5, web content like YouTube and a search interface that brings it all together.

What you get is an interface running on top of a derivative of Android 2.1 plus Chrome rather than the Android browser – but still with Flash 10.1 built in.

That’s all running on an Intel Atom CE4150 processor with hardware accelerated video encoding and decoding (for H.264 but not for WebM) rather than the ARM processor we’re used to seeing Android on. And that means that not only is the Revue’s case large enough to fit in a full set of connectors – HDMI in, HDMI out, Ethernet, two USB ports, two IR blaster ports and SPDIF – it also has air vents and a fan (although you won’t notice it over the sound of your TV).

Most add-on media streaming boxes that you plug into your TV, like Apple TV and Boxee systems, leave you to control your TV separately, with its original remote.

Google TV is more like Windows Media Centre (or the Windows Media Center-based set-top boxes that will be out this year), where you get one remote control for working with both TV and online content, and you can see TV shows (from a cable TV or set-top box but not broadcast channels, at least on the systems we tested) full screen or in a picture-in-picture window, via the HDMI port.

The Revue has the advantage of Logitech’s Harmony remote technology; tell it the model of your TV, set-top box or AV receiver (easier said than done if you’ve got a flatscreen mounted on the wall) and it looks them up in its online database and lets you control them from the Revue remote.

It’s limited to controlling three IR devices, but it does mean you only have one remote to find space for. But that remote is actually a full size QWERTY keyboard, which is going to put off a number of mainstream users straight away.

Here’s the best of CES 2011.

The Best of CES 2011 will be posted in 2 parts. Don’t forget check out Part-2 later on.

So lets begin Part-1 …

Motorola Xoom Tablet

Android tablets are coming fast and furious in 2011, but the leader is likely to be Motorola’sHoneycomb-powered 10.1-inch slate, the Xoom. With LTE 4G wireless, 32GB of on-board storage, an SD Card slot, and a standard micro USB port, this tablet looks like the open-standard alternative to the iPadthat I’ve been waiting all year for.–Robert Strohmeyer

HTC Thunderbolt Smartphone

So the HTC Thunderbolt isn’t a dual-core phone, but we’ve been waiting anxiously for this mobile–since we first saw the leaked photos of it. Want. –Ginny Mies

Clever USB Thumbdrives From Casio and Olympus

One of the best things this year was the near-complete lack of CD-based digital press kits. Instead, most companies usedUSB thumbdrives–and some used imagination as well. Olympus’s USB drive looked like a miniature DSLR, while Casio’s was a tiny re-creation of its just-announced Tryx camera. –Tim Moynihan

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Smartphone

After the hopelessly outdatedXperia X10 appeared, who knew that Sony Ericsson would bring an awesome smartphone to CES? The Xperia Arc is ultrathin with a brilliant screen and HDMI output that works throughout the OS. And it runs the latest version of Android. –Jared Newman

Eton’s Shoulder Bag Boom Box

They look like shoulder bags, but the trapezoidal objects on the straps are actually solar-powered boom boxes with iPoddocks–and surprisingly robust-sounding ones at that. The new Eton Soulra XL model (due out “soon”) runs for 4 hours on a wall charge, but on a sunny day with the flip-up solar panel activated, they can go for twice that long. Who says green tech can’t rock? –Yardena Arar

This was the Part-1 of The Best of CES 2011, will be updating part-2 soon. Don’t go away.

Windows Phone 7 is a completely new mobile operating system, built from the ground up and not resembling its clunky predecessor, Windows Mobile 6.5, in the slightest. After just a few minutes playing with a fully functional Windows Phone 7 device, we were left impressed.

What we liked
The user interface of Microsoft Windows Phone 7 is completely different to anything currently on the market. It’s made up of large tiles that can be organised in any way you wish; tiles can be “pinned” to the home screen, and the default tiles can be removed. You can simply press and hold a tile to move it around the screen.

The tiles offer a refreshing look and feel, with large text and live images. For example, the “People” tile — a centralised hub for multiple forms of communication with contacts — will display live photos of the last few people you’ve interacted with. There’s no limit to the number of tiles you can pin to the home screen, so it can be as long or as short as you want.

Once you open one of Windows Phone 7′s default “hubs” (People, Pictures, Games, Music, Video, Marketplace, Office), the UI utilises a panorama-style view. Slide left and right to browse through the panorama; for example, the People hub consists of a list of those you’ve had recent contact with, all of your contacts and a What’s New list that integrates real-time Facebook and Windows Live updates.

One thing we noticed was how smooth the entire experience is. Whether it is scrolling through tiles on the home screen, opening applications, or performing basic tasks such as dialling a phone number or typing a text message, the interface feels fresh, zippy and completely natural. It’s a completely the opposite experience to using previous Windows phones, which were often rightly accused of having clunky, lag-ridden interfaces. The Windows Phone 7 UI even makes the iPhone and Google Android interfaces feel slightly dated.

The on-screen keyboard is excellent. We found it more comfortable and accurate in landscape mode, but it works well in portrait mode too. The keys are well spaced and make a soothing clicking sound when pressed, while the built-in spell corrector allows you to tap on a word to bring up a list of suggested words.

Instead of a regular contact list, Microsoft has gone the whole hog and opted for an optimised “People” hub. You simply enter your Facebook, Windows Live ID and other e-mail accounts (the OS naturally supports Microsoft Exchange e-mail) and it automatically grabs your contact list and keeps them updated in real time. Conveniently, you can choose to add all your Facebook contacts to your people hub, or simply add Facebook info for the existing contacts you already have. Facebook status updates, e-mails, calls, messages and IMs all appear in this single People hub, and you can also pin the tile of an individual to your home screen for quick access.

Being a Windows Phone, the OS naturally comes with the full OneNote Office mobile suite, including applications to create, view and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents.

What we didn’t like
Despite all the positives, there are a number of issues with Windows Phone 7, headed by the lack of a copy and paste function. We expect this to eventually be added, but it is definitely a disappointing omission.

Windows Phone 7 also has no support for third-party app multitasking — Microsoft says that the reason for this is to preserve performance. (This is something that the company is all too familiar with considering it was a huge issue in Windows Mobile 6.5) While we can understand the reasoning, it remains disappointing.

One omission that is definitely not understandable is the lack of integrated Twitter support. The social-networking site is extremely popular and many Google Android smartphones have integrated Twitter access, including HTC’s Sense UI (as seen on the HTC Desire and HTC Wildfire smartphones). Twitter seems like a perfect fit for Windows Phone 7′s People hub, so we’re not sure why it hasn’t been included.

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 devices are expected to hit the shelves before Christmas, possibly as soon as October. Are you tempted to switch from your iPhone, Android or BlackBerry smartphone?

Sony had its work cut out when it came time to improve the next generation of its e-readers. Amazon’s Kindle isn’t only the best selling electronic reading device out there, but its new $139 WiFi version is the fastest-selling yet.

Sony had some serious work to do and its cheapest option – the $179.99 Pocket Edition — does differentiate in some striking ways. The aluminum reader has been upgraded with a new 5-inch E Ink Pearl display and now has an extremely responsive touchscreen for navigating through books / menus. The updates certainly have put Sony back into the final four, but there’s a few lacking features that just keep it from going all the way.

The repeated first reaction to our brushed silver Pocket Edition over the last week? “It’s so cute!” Oh yes, the 5.7 x 4.1 x .33-inch reader is quite the cutie compared to the 7.5 x 4.8 x 0.33-inch Kindle and 7.7 x 4.9 x .05-inch Nook. Sure, its name is a bit misleading, and it won’t fit in a jeans pocket, but the 0.71-pound gadget is easily held in one hand and slides into a small purse / shoulder bag. We can’t say we’ve ever found the new 0.85-pound Kindle to be a strain on our own paws, but the Pocket Edition’s trimmer size and weight makes it even easier to hold while lying down or reclining in your La-Z-Boy.

The aluminum clad reader feels incredibly solid, and its plastic edges seem to give it a bit of protection. Of course, if you’re the type that uses and abuses products, the Kindle’s plastic body will probably wear better over time – honestly, we’d worry if the Pocket Edition were to accidentally fall off a table onto a hard surface, we’d stay cool if it were the Kindle or the Nook. Ports-wise, Sony’s kept the Reader fairly bare – there’s a mini USB jack on the bottom edge, a power switch along the top and a stylus ejects from the right side. You have to step up to Sony’s Touch or Daily Editions to get the SD card, MemoryStick and 3.5mm headphone jacks.

Sony tells us that a touchscreen was the most requested feature from users when it came to the new Pocket. And Sony, being that attentive company that it is, did exactly what was asked. While there are still five physical buttons below the screen for turning pages, getting to the menu, etc., the screen has a new integrated optical / infrared technology that doesn’t distort the text like many complained about on the previous Touch Edition Reader. We didn’t have an old Touch to compare it to, but in comparison to the Kindle the text appeared just as crisp, though there was slightly more glare on the Pocket’s display.

As we said in our original hands-on, the touchscreen is very responsive; very light swipes on the smooth screen is all it takes to turn the page and a light tap on books is plenty to make selections. The stylus we mentioned before is obviously meant for taking notes within a book, or in our case, doodling in the Handwriting application. Pen input is also very responsive, but the E Ink causes there to be a slight delay between pen strokes and the actual inking.

The way we see it there are two main reasons you’d buy the $179.99 e-reader over the Amazon Kindle or Barnes & Noble Nook: its incredibly responsive touchscreen navigation and extreme portability. However, if those don’t appeal to you or you really just prefer having a larger selection of e-books and the ability to buy books over the air via WiFi or 3G, it’s obvious that Amazon’s $139 Kindle with WiFi or its $189 3G version would be a better choice.
