India govt to block Google and Skype

Minutes from a private meeting have revealed that search giant Google and IP telephony company Skype are next in line to be targeted by the Indian government, following its crackdown on Research In Motion (RIM).

According to a report late Thursday by the Financial Times, Google, Skype and other communication services are now on the government’s black list. The Indian government had earlier threatened to shut down BlackBerry services over security concerns regarding its encrypted BlackBerry e-mail and instant messaging services, giving RIM until Aug. 31 to “come up with a technical solution” or risk being evicted from the country.

Google adds site speed to search mix

Google’s famous recipe for determining how sites get ranked in search results has a new ingredient: site speed.

Two of Google’s top search engineers–Google Fellow Amit Singhal and principal engineer Matt Cutts–announced the addition Friday, after hinting it would be coming for several months. It’s actually been live for a few weeks, they said in a blog post Friday, and Google is using a variety of components to ascertain how much faster one Web page responds compared to another.

In general, one of Google’s operating philosophies is that faster is better. It’s not just them, either: the increased demand for real-time information shows just how much people want sites and pages to load quickly, and the world’s attention spans certainly aren’t getting any longer. Read more »

New Geocoder for Google

Google has announced a new geocoding web service app authors can use to better plot locations on a map.

The new Google Geocoding Web Service includes some enhanced capabilities that not only make it possible for app developers to provide more accurate and granular locations in their apps, but it also lets them increase the performance of their apps through precaching.

First off, the new service employs the Google Maps JavaScript API version 3, which has a handful of improvements over the previous versions. Users will get more well-formed and easier to parse data from each request. The service can return full names as well as local-language abbreviations for countries, states and territories. Users also have the ability to apply multiple tags to each address component.

Microsoft and Google join forces against Terrorism

Arch rivals software giant Microsoft and search giant Google have teamed up for a good cause – to fight against terrorism and other criminal activities. The companies are jamming to stop terror organisations from using the internet for their nefarious activities including recruiting terrorists.

Microsoft and Google attended a two day meeting in in Seattle along with software giants Cisco and Symantec to figure out ways to curb terrorist activities on the world wide web; the meeting was led by the UN Working Group. Richard Barrett, the co-chair of the group said that there has been a “high level of crime on the internet”. According to Barett, “It is essential that you bring in the private sector, which is an essential partner in moving forward”. However it was also deduced that more UN departments and governments should be involved in discussions regarding fighting terrorism on the internet. The European Union and the Council of Europe may join forces with Microsoft, Google, Symantec and Cisco to tackle the terrorism via the internet. Read more »

Microsoft on Google Buzz: “Another Social Network”

Following the steps of Yahoo, Microsoft has also released its thoughts in a statement regarding Google’s new social networking service for Gmail and mobile smartphones, Google Buzz. Echoing the statement by Yahoo, Microsoft says that they also incorporated features from social websites like Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and 75 other services on Hotmail back in 2008. Read more »
