Gmail Motion: Google's April Fool's prank

Continuing its tradition of April Fool’s hoaxes Google unveiled another ‘new feature’. This time for its popular email service, Gmail. The new fabricated Gmail feature is called Gmail Motion.

According to Google, Gmail Motion is the company’s “first attempts at next generation human computer interaction.” Users will be able to control Gmail without the aid of a keyboard or mouse. Messages can be composed and replied to using only the human body.

Never the one to miss out on the little technical details, Google has put up detailed videos explaining how the thing works and have also posted a motion graph, to explain which body actions can perform what functions on Gmail as well as some safety precautions. That’s not all, Google also announced that it was bringing Gmail Motion to Google Docs later in the year.

But unlike some of its previous All Fools Day hoxes, Google reveals the plot a bit too soon. The joke is revealed soon after a user clicks on the ‘Try Gmail Motion’ button.

Google’s history of April 1 jokes can be traced back to 2000 when they announced the launch of MentalPlex, when Google asked its users to focus on a swirling spiral and project a mental image of what they wanted to search for and the results page displayed humourous error messages.

MentalPlex was followed by PigeonRank, where Google claimed that it used pigeons for its PageRank system. Other notable Google’s April Fool pranks include Google Gulp, Gmail Paper and Google TiSP.

Google also had a number of non-hoaxes on April 1. The biggest was the Gmail launch in 2004, something that many had thought to be a hoax.

Cisco announces a new router

On Tuesday the company announced the CRS-3, its next-generation Internet router for the world’s largest Internet service providers. Cisco may have overhyped the announcement just a tad. After a two-week countdown to an announcement that it said would “forever change the Internet,” the company unveiled what looks like an upgrade to its existing “core” router called the CRS-1.

While the hype machine may have failed to deliver something truly revolutionary, Cisco’s announcement is still significant. The new router offers 12 times the traffic capacity than its older-generation routers offer. It’s three times faster than the older CRS-1, which was introduced in 2004. And it can handle 322 terabits of traffic per second, or simultaneous video calls for every person in China, the company said.

The new router, which starts at $90,000, will be sold to the world’s largest Internet service providers. These aren’t your run-of-the-mill ISPs selling 10 Mbps broadband service to consumers. These companies, such as AT&T, Verizon Communications, Level3, and Sprint, are the Internet service providers that aggregate and shuttle the bulk of the nation’s Internet traffic across what is known as “the Internet backbone.”

When the new Cisco routers are installed, the average broadband consumer likely won’t notice anything new. But over time, they will see the benefits of the upgraded infrastructure. The Cisco CRS-3 will allow these Internet backbone service providers to increase capacity so that new applications, especially video-based applications, like high-definition TV, video conferencing, and 3D TV, can be offered to the mass market.

Twitter hackers appear to be Shiite group

People who tried to access Twitter early Friday were redirected to a Web site from the “Iranian Cyber Army.”

he popular microblogging site Twitter was hacked briefly by a group calling itself the Iranian Cyber Army, but the site was quickly restored after the incident early Friday.Those who tried to access Twitter were redirected to a site displaying a green flag and proclaiming, in English, “This site has been hacked by Iranian Cyber Army.” The group’s Web address was provided.

Arabic writing in blue said, “Hezbollah is victorious,” and a message on the flag said, “Ya Hussein,” referring to Prophet Mohammed’s grandson.

The United States and Israel categorize Hezbollah, a political party in Lebanon, as a terrorist organization.

“The group claiming responsibility for the Twitter hacking is previously unknown, but its symbols would be familiar to anyone looking at radical (Web) sites,” said Octavia Nasr, CNN’s senior editor for Middle East affairs.

“The hackers are definitely Shiites, as indicated by the ‘Ya Hussein’ chant printed on their banner,” she said.

“The group also uses Arabic in their text, a clear indication of collaboration with Arabic groups. Hezbollah is a Lebanese Shiite militia with ideological, political and military ties to Iran. The same name is also used by a group inside Iran.”

Twitter posted a message about 2:30 a.m. ET Friday on its official Twitter page, saying, “Twitter’s DNS (domain name system) records were temporarily compromised but have now been fixed.”

“In the past few years, we’ve been seeing a rise in desire for hacking by insurgents and terrorist groups,” said Nasr. Not only do they hack outside sites, but they hack each other’s, she said. “The idea of ‘cyber terrorism’ and ‘cyber insurgency’ has been manifested in many ways — (with) hacking individual sites being the most infamous.”

She added, “This week’s (revelation of) successful hacking of U.S. predator drone feeds by Iranian-backed Shiite militants adds another level of sophistication toward the hacking effort.”

Twitter became unwittingly involved in Iranian politics last summer.

When Iran’s disputed presidential election spiraled into bloody protests, the opposition used Twitter and other social networking sites to inform the world.

Protesters beamed images from the violent demonstrations at a time when mainstream media were given almost no access to the demonstrations.

Twitter became so fundamental in spreading news of the protests that the U.S. State Department asked the company to delay a planned shutdown for maintenance.

War of the words aren’t just limited to Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities – the flaming happens even with honchos of tech giants like Google and Microsoft.

In a recent development, Asa Dotzler, who is the Director of Community Development of Mozilla asked users to leave Google and switch to Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Note that Mozilla is funded by Google, the search engine giant pumps in millions of dollars every year to Mozilla for development of their Firefox and other products like Thunderbird. So what exactly happened here?

It turns out, Dotzler wasn’t quite happy with Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s remarks about privacy. Schmidt had stated in his blog post that those truly scared about the revelation of their ‘wrongdoings’ are the only ones who care about privacy. Here’s the part of Schmidt’s speech: ‘If you have something that you don’t want anyone to know, maybe you shouldn’t be doing it in the first place. If you really need that kind of privacy, the reality is that search engines — including Google — do retain this information for some time and it’s important, for example, that we are all subject in the United States to the Patriot Act and it is possible that all that information could be made available to the authorities.’

Dotzler didn’t exactly find Schmidt’s little speech funny, and in retaliation showed in his blog post how to switch Firefox’s default search engine from Google to Bing. “Here’s how you can easily switch Firefox’s search from Google to Bing. (Yes, Bing does have a better privacy policy than Google.)” Dotzler wrote, with some of the test hyperlinked to the tutorial.

Sharing my google wave experience, anyone want invitation?

About a month back I requested one of my online friend an invitation to try out Google Wave. Yesterday I was happy to see an email regarding my invitation to preview Google Wave.

To accept the invitation, I just had to click on a link in the email which brings me to wave.google.com. After that I proceeded to sign in excitedly using my gmail account.

After logging in, I saw an interface very similar to our standard email application.

Initially I was quite lost as to what I could do with Google Wave. Then I decided to read up a little more on how to use Google Wave via this article Google Wave 101, developed by the Lifehacker folks.

Gmail overtakes Yahoo! Mail as India’s #1 email service

The popularity of Gmail in India cannot be denied, but even we were a bit surprised by a new report that stated it has already gone past Yahoo! Mail as the country’s most preferred email service.

LiveMint is reporting that Internet user measurement and analytics platform agency ViziSense is crowning Gmail as the numero uno email service, ending Yahoo! Mail’s 10-year reign at the top.

According to the agency, the number of unique users of Yahoo! Mail dropped from 18.2 million in August to 16.8 million in September – a decline of 8 per cent. Meanwhile, Gmail gained 3 per cent in traffic to go to 18.2 million unique users in September, surpassing its rival by 1.4 million users.

Trailing the two close competitors are Rediff Mail, MSN Mail and In.com mail, in that order, reports ContentSutra. In September, Rediff Mail had 6.25 million unique users, while MSN Mail had 4.11 million and In.com mail had 0.84 million unique users.

ViziSense puts the reason behind the shift at the top on the increasing popularity of the Google brand strengthening Gmail’s image.

“The launch of Gmail in eight Indian languages was a positive step in this direction,” said Vinay Goel, head of products, Google India, stressing on local content to be the factor that took them ahead.

While Yahoo declined to comment on the ranking, it will be interesting to see what the figures are like in a couple of months since the company has started a massive advertising campaign just last week.
